2017 Electronics Recycling Event

Save the date and gather your unwanted, broken and unused electronics. In celebration of America Recycles Day, Missouri City Green, in partnership with the City of Missouri City, will host our 5th Annual Electronics Recycling Event.

Free event. Donations will be accepted to fund future community wide recycling events.

Fall Sweep: 40 bags of trash in 2 hours

52 volunteers participated in Missouri City Green's 1st Annual Keep Texas Beautiful Fall Sweep. The statewide cleanup program was held in honor of Keep Texas Beautiful's 50th Anniversary. Missouri City Green is the KTB Affiliate for Missouri City. Volunteers collected 40 bags of trash in just 2 hours along the GCWA water canal, Independence Park and  Missouri City Green's Adopt-A-Highway stretch of FM 1092. 

​Special thanks to American Heritage Girls Troop TX-1379, Trail Life Troop TX 1:1,  LDS Missionaries and volunteers from Elkins High School including students from Mu Alpha Theta and Elkins Girls Soccer team.

350 decals adhered in 2 hours: Storm Drain Marker Event: October 7

Forty nine volunteers from local Scout groups, Mu Kappa Omega sorority and Missouri City Green members adhered 350 markers to storm drain inlets in designated neighborhoods throughout Missouri City on Saturday October 7. The event was hosted by Missouri City Green working in partnership with Missouri City Public Works department. Decals were adhered to storm drain inlets to remind residents and yard crews that "nothing but rain goes down the drain".

Water Smarter Workshop: Saturday September 23

Irrigation specialists from Ft Bend Master Gardeners led a workshop on how to use water more efficiently in the yard to conserve this valuable resource. Participants were encouraged to switch to using more efficient irrigation systems like drip irrigation, selecting plants with a low water requirement, and making changes to the times when the yard is water. The workshop was hosted by Missouri City in partnership with MCPRD and Ft Bend Master Gardeners.

Compost Workshop: Saturday August 19

A compost specialist from Ft Bend Master Gardeners led a workshop on how to turn yard trimmings into fertile compost by setting up a basic backyard composting system. Participants took home a compost bin so that they could begin their composting their garden waste after the class. The workshop was hosted by Missouri City in partnership with MCPRD and Ft Bend Master Gardeners.

For the 4th year in a row, volunteers from Missouri City Green assisted at the Back-To-School event hosted by Access Health in Missouri City which offers free immunization and screening for students of low income families.

Students learn about recycling at Day Camp: August 1

Students from the Day Camp sponsored by MC Parks and Rec were treated to a class on recycling by volunteers from Missouri City Green. Students created chia pets using recycled water bottles, spiders using recycled water bottle caps and learned ways that families can practice recycling.

Mycle Recycle, Missouri City Green's mascot was a big hit with the campers!


Missouri City Green awarded Gold Star Status at KTB Conference

Missouri City Green once again was named a Gold Star Affiliate at the Keep Texas Beautiful Annual Conference. The June 2017 Conference marked the 50th Anniversary of Keep Texas Beautiful of which Missouri City Green is an affiliate.

At the Conference, two members of Missouri City Green presented a workshop on the Edible Arbor Trail and the annual Edible Earth Fest hosted by Missouri City Green and the Missouri City Parks and Recreation Department.

2nd Annual Paper Shredding Event - over 260 cars in 2 hours!

Our 2nd Annual Paper Shredding Event on April 29 was an overwhelming hit with the community. Over 260 cars passed through the line in just 2 hours. Based on last year's attendance, we hired a second truck but by 11am we had reached capacity on both trucks and our event was over. 

The generous donations made by this year's attendees will allow us to host another FREE community wide Paper Shredding Event scheduled for late April 2018.

Missouri City Green, in partnership with Missouri City Parks & Rec, Brightwater Garden Club and Ft Bend Master Gardner Entomology group volunteers, hosted the annual Earth Day celebration at Southminster School showcasing earth-friendly activities for 4 through 6 grade students. Missouri City Green led an activity creating self-watering planters out of recycled water bottles. The planters were used to start basil seeds. The students also helped plant 2 fruit trees and a vegetable garden and learned about beneficial insects.

One ton of trash in just 2 hours! Saturday April 8

167 volunteers from across the community fanned out to remove trash from Missouri City's parks and trails.  In just 2 hours, 127 bags of trash (over 1 ton)  were collected, as well as 9 bags of trash from FM  1092, Missouri City Green's Adopt-A-Highway section. 

Volunteers, ranging between 3 years and 70+ , enjoyed the beautiful spring weather and the opportunity to work together as individuals, families, school groups, scout groups, sororities and church groups to help make a measurable difference.

2nd Annual Edible Earth Fest: Saturday March 11


A great time was had by all - adults, kids and dogs - at the 2nd Annual Edible Earth Fest along the Edible Arbor Trail on Saturday March 11.

Volunteers from Missouri City Green, MC Parks & Rec, Ft Bend Master Gardeners, Missouri City Community Garden, Mu Kappa Omega Sorority and the Girl Scouts provided a wealth of activities for all ages in celebration of Earth Day.

Team MCG plants 100 trees: Saturday February 11

Missouri City Green recently participated in the Houston Area Urban Forestry Council's 10th Annual Tree Planting Competition. 22 teams from across the area, including Team MCG, planted approximately 2200 trees at Missouri City's Buffalo Run Park.

Missouri City Green volunteers also helped at the check in table and with serving food provided by CenterPoint Energy for the hardworking tree planters.

Adopt-A-Highway: 27 bags of trash in 2.5 hours!

At our recent Adopt-A-Highway clean up along Missouri City Green's two mile stretch of FM 1092, volunteers from Missouri City Green and the LDS volunteer corp collected 27 large bags of trash in just 2.5 hours.

Electronics Recycling Event: November 19

Our recycling event in honor of America Recycles Day was a huge success! On Saturday November 19, close to 400 cars drove through the line to drop off unwanted electronics to be recycled by CompuCycle, our e-cycling vendor.

The event was hosted by Missouri City Green in partnership with The City of Missouri City and Missouri City Parks and Rec Department.

Thanks to the generous donations made by participants at the event, enough funds were raised to fund our Paper Shredding Event scheduled for Saturday April 29, 2017.

Missouri City Green hosted recycling expert Amanda Beard to give residents pointers on how to recycle right at the November General Meeting.

Key recycling tips:
  • No styrofoam
  • No green waste (yard trimmings)
  • No food waste (wash out all recycling containers)
  • When in doubt, leave it out!

Monarch Butterfly Workshop: October 22

​​Missouri City Green recently hosted a workshop led by Barbara Keller-Willy of Monarch Gateway on the importance of providing a food source for migrating monarch butterflies.

Attendees at the workshop received hard-to-find native milkweed seeds to propagate and plant in their yards.

Monarch Gateway is a 501(c)3 non profit dedicated to working with individuals, communities and cities to create habitats to support migrating monarch populations.

2nd Annual Storm Drain Marker Event: A Success!

Volunteers both young and old fanned out in groups to adhere decals to storm drain inlets in 7 different subdivisions in Missouri City to remind residents and lawn crews that "nothing but rain goes down the drain!".

​Boy and Girl Scouts, service organizations, companies, families and individuals came out to make a difference to help ensure our storm drain system is working effectively. A huge thanks to our hardworking volunteers!

Join us for our next event in October 2017 as we partner with MC Public Works to ensure that every storm inlet drain in Missouri City is marked.

Don't Mess With Texas Trash & Treasure Hunt: Sept 10

Missouri City was selected by TxDOT as one of 25 cities throughout Texas to host a 'Don't Mess with Texas Trash & Treasure Hunt' in celebration of the 30th Anniversary of the 'Don't Mess with Texas' campaign for a litter free Texas.

Volunteers of all ages picked up trash along the Edible Arbor Trail and earned tickets in the draw for each bag of trash for prizes generously donated by event sponsors including Yeti, McDonalds and Skeeters baseball.

Backyard Composting Workshop: August 20



Missouri City Green hosted a Backyard Composting Workshop in partnership with Ft Bend Master Gardener Composting Specialist and MCPRD. 42 adults and 6 children attended the 2 hour workshop and learned how to create a simple backyard composting system where yard clippings and vegetable scraps are turned into fertile compost. All registered participants took home a compost bin.

​Paper Shredding: June 11, 2016


Missouri City Green's first Paper Shredding Event was a huge success! Approximately 240 vehicles passed through the line dropping off enough paper to fill ProShred's 32ft truck well before our 12 noon finish time. All shredded paper will be locally recycled.

This event was funded by generous donations from the public at our previous electronic recycling events.  Thanks to the generosity of donors at our Paper Shredding Event we have funds to help offset the cost of our next community wide event - Electronics Recycling January 2017.

Special thanks to our hardworking volunteers who braved the heat to help unload vehicles and direct traffic.

Don't Mess with Texas Trash-Off 2016: April 9, 2016

200 volunteers participated in Missouri City's Don't Mess with Texas Trash-Off 2016, part of the largest one day cleanup event in the State of Texas. The event was a huge success with volunteers from across the city gathering to remove litter from Missouri City's parks. Missouri City Green and MC Parks and Rec partnered together to host the event for the 4th consecutive year.

Missouri City Green once again offered recycling bins for plastic eggs at this popular event sponsored by Missouri City Parks and Recreation. Making his debut appearance at the event was Mycle Recycle, Missouri City Green's new mascot made possible by a generous grant from Dow Chemical.

Edible Earth Fest: March 5, 2016 

Over 400 people attended Edible Earth Fest held along the Edible Arbor Trail on Saturday March 5. Participants of all ages joined in the fun at 5 different booths positioned along the Trail where Missouri City Green volunteers provided earth friendly activities.

​The event was another successful partnership between Missouri City Green and the MC Parks and Recreation Department.

Growing a Family - YIP Volunteer Event January 16, 2016

Missouri City Green partnered with Fort Bend Family Promise to create a volunteer opportunity for the Fort Bend Youth In Philanthropy students at the new Family Promise Day Center. Students were divided into 4 groups to plant a vitex and Walter's viburnums that will provide a privacy screen for the Day Center's back yard. City Forester Paul Wierzbicki showed the students how to correctly plant a tree and Fort Bend Family Promise's Executive Director Vera Johnson helped the students understand the reality of temporary homelessness for families in Fort Bend.

This project was awarded an Excellence in Leadership Award by Fort Bend YIP and the George Foundation.

 After-The-Holidays Electronics Recycling Event: January 9, 2016 
A huge success!

Thanks to the collaborative efforts of Missouri City Green's volunteers, the City of Missouri City, Missouri City Parks & Recreation Dept and CompuCycle (R2 Certified Recycler) our 3rd Annual Electronics Recycling Event on Saturday January 9 was a HUGE success.

Over 420 people drove through the line to recycle their unwanted, outdated and broken electronics. Donated items will be refurbished, where possible, or broken down so that their valuable component parts can be put back into the manufacturing process.
Special thanks to those who generously donated toward future community clean up events.

Learning how to transform yard clippings into fertile compost:

At our recent Backyard Composting Class, experts from Fort Bend Master Gardeners showed 30 participants the basics of setting up a backyard composting system. Each participant received a FREE compost bin to take home!

3rd Annual CitywideTrash-Off: Saturday November 7, 2015

Missouri City Green, in partnership with Missouri City Parks & Recreation Department hosted Missouri City's 3rd Annual Citywide Trash Off on Saturday November 7, 2015. 80 Volunteers collected 120 bags of litter from Missouri City parks in just 2 hours! Volunteers enjoyed lunch and an award ceremony following the trash collection where volunteer groups were recognized for their participation, efforts and the most unusual piece of trash collected!

Water Conservation Workshop: October 24, 2015

Fort Bend Master Gardeners presented a comprehensive program on the techniques home owners can adopt to conserve water including installing an efficient irrigation system, setting up a rainwater harvesting system and selecting plants with low water requirements.  Robert Upton from the City of Missouri City provided information on the current status of Missouri City's water source and plans for the future. Each registered participant received a rain barrel to install in their back yard.

Family Fun Bug Night: October 9, 2015

Missouri City Green partnered with Missouri City Parks and Recreation Department and the Fort Bend Master Gardeners to provide an evening of creepy crawly fun for bug lovers of all ages on Friday October 9. 

Successful Storm Drain Marker Event: October 3, 2015

The Storm Drain Marker event, hosted by Missouri City Green on October 3, was a huge success thanks to our volunteers, both young and old, who came out as individuals, families and groups to help make a difference.

In 2 hours, 55 volunteers led by 12 Missouri City Green members installed 237 storm drain markers throughout Quail Valley. Great collaborative partnership event between the Missouri City Public Works Department, Missouri City Green and the community. Our combined efforts will help to keep the local storm drain system clean and safe!

Worm Composting Workshop: May 9, 2015

60 people, including 12 children, attended Missouri City Green's first Worm Composting Workshop on May 9th.  Composting specialists from Fort Bend Master Gardeners taught participants how to set up and maintain a healthy worm bin.  Participants had fun creating their own bin full of wriggling worms to take home! This event was hosted by Missouri City Green with support from Missouri City Parks & Rec.

Members of Missouri City Green joined Missouri City Park & Recreation and the Brightwater Garden Club to celebrate Earth Day 2015 at Southminister School, Missouri City.  Students planted a Vitex and Montezuma Cypress tree, made chia pets out of recycled materials and learned which plants attract pollinators.

Missouri City Green partnered with the City Forester, Paul Wierzbicki, to present a hands-on program, attended by 50 people on how to select trees suitable for Missouri City and surrounding areas, correct planting techniques, and guidance on tree care and maintenance.

Treeplanting at Right Tree Trail


Volunteers from Missouri City Green teamed up with volunteers from CenterPoint Energy to plant 20 new trees along the Right Tree Trail at Ridgeview Park on Saturday November 15.  The event was hosted by the Missouri City Parks and Recreation department.

City Forester Paul Wierzbicki demonstrated how to correctly plant a tree taking care to avoid covering the 'root flare', the top layer of roots above the root ball.  

The purpose of the Right Tree Trail is to show the types of trees that can grow to their fullest potential without interfering with overhead utility lines.

The Right Tree Trail is located at 3902 Ridgeview Dr, Missouri City, TX 77459 and is part of the Missouri City Parks system.

Rainharvesting Workshop

Missouri City Green hosted a Rainwater Harvesting Workshop on Saturday November 1. Held in partnership with Fort Bend Master Gardeners and the Missouri City Parks and Recreation, the class was taught by Kenneth Fletcher, a Water Conservation Specialist from Fort Bend Master Gardeners. 

Rainwater harvesting focuses on capturing rainwater from your roof and diverting it to irrigate plants and vegetables. After the class,  each participant received a rain barrel (valued at $70) to take home with instructions on how to correctly install a backyard rainwater harvesting system.  For further information on rainwater harvesting click here.

Funding for this event was provided by a grant from the Fort Bend Junior Service League  and sponsors Living Earth and Union Pacific. 

Earth-Kind® Home Landscaping

Missouri City Green hosted a class on "Earth-Kind® Home Landscaping" on Saturday October 18th.  The class was taught by Peggy D'Hemecourt a specialist from Fort Bend County Master Gardeners. 

Earth-Kind® Landscaping focuses on conserving and protecting natural resources through the use of environmentally friendly practices to create beautiful, easy-care landscapes, as well as, vegetable gardens and fruit plantings.  Gardening the Earth-Kind way provides maximum gardening pleasure while still preserving and protecting the environment.  For more information on Earth-Kind® Landscaping click here.

This event was made possible by the collaborative efforts of Missouri City Green, Missouri City Parks & Recreation and Fort Bend County Master Gardeners.  Class sponsors were Living Earth and Union Pacific.  Thirty one-gallon Copper Canyon Daisy Plants were donated for the event by TreeSearch Farms.

Composting 101 Workshop

Missouri City Green, in partnership with Missouri City Parks and Recreation and Fort Bend County Master Gardeners, hosted a Composting Workshop on Saturday September 13.  Over sixty participants learned how to turn their garden waste and kitchen scraps into nutrient-rich fertilizer to use in their garden beds at this workshop taught by Fort Bend County Master Gardener Compost Specialist, Sam Guardiola.  Each registered participant went home with a compost bin ($60 value) so they could start their own backyard composting.  For further information on composting click here.

Electronics Recycling 



Missouri City Green hosted two successful electronics recycling events in 2014 where over 700 area residents took advantage of the opportunity to safely dispose of their unwanted and outdated electronics.  Over 50,000 pounds of e-waste was safely disposed of and kept off area landfills.

The events were hosting with support from Missouri City Parks and Recreation, and volunteers from Missouri City Core (City of Missouri City staff), Fort Bend County Juvenile Probation Department and Missouri City Green volunteers. 


Trash-Off

As part of the Great American Clean Up, Missouri City Green hosted a successful Trash-Off event in March 2014.  Over 300 volunteers, including area residents, Scouts, high school service organizations, and Missouri City Green members, helped to remove 200 bags of trash from public areas throughout Missouri City including City parks and trails.

Missouri City Green was given a special award by Keep Texas Beautiful for The Most Unusual item of trash collected - a large plastic santa!

Earth Day Celebration


The Edible Arbor Trail

Missouri City Green and Missouri City Parks and Recreation hosted a tree planting program along Oyster Creek Trail in Missouri City on February 22, 2014.  Over 100 people participated in planting seven different varieties of fruit and nut trees along the trail. 

This event was part of an ongoing tree planting project that was made possible in part by a United Way of Greater Houston Community Building Grant.

In partnership with Missouri City Parks and Recreation, Missouri City Forester, and Brightwater Garden Club, Missouri City Green celebrated Earth Day at a local elementary school in Missouri City.

Students helped plant a tree on their playground that is a sapling of the historic Freedom Oak Tree, located in Missouri City.

As part of the Earth Day activities, students learned about the importance of recycling and composting and created bird feeders out of recycled soda bottles.  Students were also introduced to beneficial insects and the importance of protecting them by avoiding the use of harmful pesticides.  
Finally, students helped release hundreds of ladybugs onto the playground.
