Educational Workshops
Backyard and Worm Composting Classes
Missouri City Green, in partnership with Fort Bend Master Gardeners and Missouri City Parks and Recreation (MCPRD), presents family-friendly composting workshops where participants learn how to create and maintain a basic backyard composting system for yard trimmings and vegetable waste from the kitchen. Participants take home a compost bin so they can start composting their garden waste after the class.
Family friendly workshops are also given on worm composting. Composting with worms is often called an "organic garbage disposal system". Worms can efficiently recycle vegetable peelings and paper products through their bodies to produce a rich, earth-smelling soil conditioner that plants love. Compost specialists from Fort Bend Master Gardeners teach adults and children the benefits of worm composting and how to set up and maintain a healthy worm bin. Each family will take home the supplies needed to start their own worm composting system at the end of the workshop.

Rainwater Harvesting
Fort Bend County Master Gardener Water Conservation Specialists, in conjunction with Missouri City Green and MCPR, provide workshops on installing a rainwater harvesting system for the backyard of a family home. Rainwater harvesting focuses on capturing rainwater from your roof and diverting it to irrigate plants and vegetables. As part of the workshop, each participant will receive a rain barrel to take home with instructions on how to correctly install a backyard rainwater harvesting system.
In Texas, over 30% of the water we use goes to outdoor irrigation. When we use rainwater to water our landscape, gardens and container plants, we conserve our drinking water and save money on our water bill. Rainwater is not only free, it's salt-free and a good source of water for all of our plants. The easiest way to begin harvesting rainwater for your home is to collect rainwater from your roof and store it in rain barrels.
